Frequently Asked Questions
Which was the Raptors' best year?
Toronto Raptors' best year was the 2019 championship season. It was a memorable and thrilling season for the Raptors. This was their first ever NBA Championship. Kawhi Leonard was named Finals' MVP and the team had a regular season record of 58-24. They beat the Golden State Warriors six times to win the title.
2013 saw the Toronto Raptors replace Bryan Colangelo as general manager with MasaiUjiri. This move would signal a new era for the franchise that would see them become one of the best teams in the NBA.
The Raptors under Ujiri enjoyed a resurgence and reached the playoffs in 2014. This was their first playoff appearance since 2008. They've won five division titles and had their best season yet in 2018. Ujiri was also able to make a risky yet successful trade that sent DeMar DeRozan from the San Antonio Spurs to get Kawhi Leonard.
The Raptors had an amazing 2019, winning their first conference championship and reaching the NBA finals for a record-breaking second time. They conquered the Golden State Warriors in a total of six games.
Ujiri's tenure with the Raptors has been a resounding success, and he should be credited with changing the team's fortunes. His leadership has made the Raptors one of the most successful teams in the NBA, and they look set to continue to be contenders for many years.
The 2019 championship season, which was undoubtedly the best in Raptors history, will be a lasting memory.
As we advance, Ujiri and the rest of the Toronto Raptors organization should remain focused on creating a winning culture that supports their players and staff. The future of this team looks bright with their dedication to excellence. The Toronto Raptors have set the bar high for 2019 with their championship season. Now, it is up to Ujiri's team to build on this success.
What was the Toronto Raptors first season?
The Toronto Raptors lost 21 games in their first season. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors season was the inaugural season of the Toronto Raptors in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Raptors, along the Vancouver Grizzlies were two expansion teams that joined this league. It was also the first NBA season playing outside of the United States.
Isiah THOMAS, an All Star point guard from the Detroit Pistons, became the General Manager. He was involved in the draft that produced Damon Stoudamire. He would go on to win Rookie-of-the Year. They also acquired Tracy Murray (and Oliver Miller) in separate trades. Thomas introduced a new primary emblem featuring a dinosaur playing ball and pinstripe uniforms sporting the logo on the front. The Raptors have added purple and red colors to their colour scheme.
Brendan Malone became the Raptors head coach on November 3. They beat the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome to win their debut. But they lost the next seven games.
Murray finished second on team scoring, averaging 16.2 point per game. He was also the leader with 151 3-point field goals. Miller had 12.9 points per game, 1.4 steals, 1.4 assists and 1.9 block per match, while Robertson was responsible for 9.3 points with 4.4rebounds, four assists, two steals per contest off the bench.
Despite having the worst attendance record in the league they still managed to attract over 17283 fans per match at SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
The dispute with Vancouver City Council over arena financing led to NBA leaving Vancouver. The City of Vancouver was to contribute $40million towards the construction a new basketball venue. This would include 12 luxury suites as well as two restaurants, a bar and a hotel. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. This would mean that the city would have needed to borrow $200m to build the arena. The team owners had to only pay $20 million. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.
The City Council stated that they would be open to the plan if the NBA agreed not to leave Rogers Arena until the new facility opens. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. It was too small for them to continue playing there. They felt that asking them to play in a smaller venue was unfair, especially since they weren't making any additional revenue.
The City Council then asked the province to step in and help out by offering financial assistance. Although the province was willing to donate $150 million, the City Council still needed additional $100 million. At that point, the City decided to stop its plans and concentrate on building a new downtown arena.
What did the Toronto Raptors do when Kawhi Leonard moved out of town?
It was a record year for the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors won 53 consecutive games during the 2020 season. The team's success was largely due to the play of All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry, who averaged 19.7 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game. Lowry was joined by fellow All-Star forward Pascal Siakam, who averaged 22.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Norman Powell and Fred VanVleet made significant contributions for the Raptors. The team's talent, depth, and versatility helped them overcome injuries to Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka.
The team was lead by Nick Nurse (Coach of the Year) and Pascal Siakam (All NBA Second Teamer). . Siakam became a star thanks to bold strategic decisions made by Coach Nurse. He averaged nearly 20+ point per game. Kyle Lowry was chosen to the 2020 NBA All-Star roster, his sixth consecutive selection.
The playoffs began later than usual this year, in August, at the "Bubble" in Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando. In round one, the Raptors took on the Brooklyn Nets. They won 4-0. They went down 0-2 against the Boston Celtics in the next round, but OG Anunoby hit a buzzer-beater to win Toronto the third game. The series went on to seven games before Boston won.
Who owns Toronto Raptors
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment is the owner of the team. MLSE also has the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs as well as the MLS's Toronto FC and CFL's Toronto Argonauts. They also own the AHL's Toronto Marlies and Toronto Rock lacrosse team.
