As we look ahead to the upcoming NBA season, it's important to analyze the Toronto Raptors' roster and the potential impact of recent signings. While there are still possibilities for trades and roster changes, the addition of Garrett Temple on a one-year minimum contract warrants closer examination.
The Core Four
This season's core group for the Raptors consists of Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, and Chris Boucher. This quartet played 384 minutes together last season and had a positive plus-minus rating of plus-48. However, they do face certain challenges.
However, like any group, they do face certain challenges. It's not all smooth sailing for this talented foursome. They have to navigate through obstacles and find ways to overcome them. One of the challenges they face is the constant pressure and expectations that come with being part of a successful team. The spotlight is always on them, and they must consistently perform at a high level.
Another challenge they face is the need to stay healthy. Injuries can derail even the most promising teams; this quartet is no exception. They have to take care of their bodies and ensure they are in peak condition to perform at their best. This means getting enough rest, eating well, and staying disciplined with their training regimen.
Furthermore, they have to find ways to improve their game continuously. The NBA is a highly competitive league, with teams constantly scouting and analyzing their opponents. To stay ahead of the game, this quartet has to constantly evolve and adapt. They need to work on their weaknesses and refine their strengths. This requires a growth mindset and a willingness to put in the work.
Additionally, they must maintain good chemistry and communication on and off the court. Basketball is a team sport, and success often hinges on how well players can work together. This quartet must deeply understand each other's playing styles, strengths, and weaknesses. They need to trust each other and be willing to make sacrifices for the team's greater good.
Lastly, they must deal with the pressure of expectations from fans, media, and themselves. The Raptors have a passionate fan base, and they expect nothing but the best from their team. This quartet must learn to block out the noise and focus on their goals. They must have a strong mental game and not let external factors affect their performance.
The Shooting Dilemma
When it comes to this group's shooting, there's a glaring issue. Jakob Poeltl cannot shoot, and Scottie Barnes is still honing his shooting skills. Siakam, although talented, struggles with three-point shooting. Anunoby is the only consistent three-point shooter, but his shots mainly come from catch-and-shoot situations.
Let's face it; this group needs a serious upgrade in their shooting game. We're not talking about a slight improvement; we're talking about a complete transformation. And that's where Darko and his staff come in. Raptors' shooting specialists will work closely with each player to develop their shooting abilities to the next level. They'll analyze their form, fine-tune their technique, and provide personalized training sessions to revolutionize their shooting game.
The Need for a Traditional Point Guard
Another issue for the Raptors is the absence of a traditional point guard. Barnes and Siakam are capable playmaking forwards, but the absence of VanVleet creates a void in the lineup. Dennis Schröder, who joined the team recently, sees himself as the starting point guard. However, he also lacks strong shooting skills, and having four below-average shooters on the court simultaneously could pose challenges. Last season, the Raptors ranked 28th in three-point shooting percentage.
Gary Trent Jr.: A Potential Sixth Man
Gary Trent Jr. presents an interesting dilemma for the starting lineup. While he is an above-average shooter, his lack of playmaking abilities makes him an unconventional fit in the starting five. In the past, Trent has shown a willingness to come off the bench, making him a strong candidate for the sixth-man role. The battle between Schröder and Trent for the starting point guard position will be one to watch.
Rotation and Minutes Distribution
Toronto is unlikely to regularly play all 11 players on the roster, even with the new head coach Darko Rajaković's fair approach to minutes distribution. However, all five core players should receive playing time throughout the season.
Precious Achiuwa, who is extension-eligible, will be a key player for the Raptors, emphasizing his bounce-back performance. Achiuwa and Boucher formed a formidable bench duo last season and are expected to continue in that role this year.
Gradey Dick, the promising rookie, may not have made an immediate impact during the Summer League, but his shooting skills will be highly valuable for the team. His development will be crucial for the Raptors' success.
Jaden McDaniels remains a bit of a question mark for Toronto. While he provides some three-and-D capabilities, his shooting percentage from behind the arc last season was only 33%. His contract suggests he will see playing time, but McDaniels' minutes may be affected if Banton performs well.
Garrett Temple, the team's newest addition, will offer valuable bench depth and mentorship to the young core of players. At 37 years old, his impact on the court may be limited, but his off-court contributions will be significant.
Kezie Okpala and Justin Champagnie face uncertain futures with the team as they fell out of the rotation last season. While Okpala was kept around for now, making the roster after training camp is not guaranteed for either of them.
Malachi Flynn, the point guard, has one last opportunity to prove himself beyond a depth guard role. Under the new coaching staff, he has the chance to impress and redefine his position on the team.
Players such as Marcus Freeman-Liberty, Don Harper, and Nowell are expected to spend most of the season with the Raptors 905 on two-way contracts.
As we approach the start of the regular season, the Toronto Raptors have a talented and intriguing roster. The team's success will heavily depend on the core group of players, developing young talents, and finding the right balance between shooting and playmaking. With the potential for trades and further roster adjustments, it will be fascinating to see how the lineup evolves throughout the season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is the owner of Toronto Raptors?
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment owns the team. MLSE also owns Toronto FC's NHL team, Toronto FC's MLS team, and the Toronto Argonauts CFL team.
When did the Raptors win its first playoff series in their history?
Toronto won their inaugural playoff series when they defeated New York 3-1 in 2001. They reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2001 for the first and only time under Lenny Wilkens.
How was the Toronto Raptors' first year?
The Toronto Raptors' first season in the NBA was a difficult one. Isiah Thomas became GM and hired Brendan Malone as head coach of the new Raptors franchise in 1995, and the team soon acquired several talented players in the draft and through trades. They defeated the mighty Chicago Bulls once that season, but overall they finished with a 21-61 win-loss record.
Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. Camby became Rookie Of The Year and was a part of the starting line up with Alvin Williams, at point guard. Damon Stoudamire was traded in 1997. Toronto continued to make roster changes as it sought to establish a foundation for future success.
Despite all the changes, Toronto struggles through its first few NBA seasons. Toronto lost the 2000 series to the New York Knicks after a period of rebuilding and transition.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
The dispute with Vancouver City Council over arena financing led to NBA leaving Vancouver. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. To pay down existing debt, the City Council wanted the $60 million taxpayer money that the City Council would give to the team owner. This meant that the city would have had to borrow $200m in order to build the arena. While the team owners had only to pay $20 million, this was a huge difference. This would result in the city being responsible for paying the rest of its loan.
The City Council agreed that the plan could be approved if the NBA was willing to continue playing at Rogers Arena through the opening of the new facility. But the league refused, saying that the arena wasn’t large enough. They didn't want to play there anymore because it was too small. They felt that it was unfair for them to continue playing in a smaller space when they weren't receiving any additional revenue.
The City Council asked for financial assistance and offered to help the province. Although the province offered $150 million to the project, the City Council needed $100 million more. At that point, the City decided to stop its plans and concentrate on building a new downtown arena.
