Frequently Asked Questions
When was the Raptors' first game?
On November 3, 1995, the Raptors played their first regular season against the New Jersey Nets at the SkyDome. Alvin Robertson scored the first points in franchise lore. The Raptors defeated the Nets 94-79 with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 points and 10 assists) and Robertson (30 pts).
Vancouver was there a NBA team?
Vancouver does have an NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies played in Vancouver from 1995-2001. The team relocated to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver basketball fans support the Toronto Raptors, as they are the nearest NBA team to their area. In addition, other professional basketball teams play in and around the Greater Vancouver Area, such as the BC Tigers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and the Vancouver Volcanoes of the International Basketball League. There are many amateur and semi-professional basketball teams that play in local leagues.
Aside from playing basketball, there are many other recreational outlets for fans in Vancouver to connect with their favourite sport. For example, the Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association is a group that strives to connect former players from the team with each other and also bring awareness of basketball in British Columbia. The association hosts clinics and viewing parties for Raptors matches.
The city's love of basketball has not decreased since the departures of the Grizzlies. And it continues to be a supportive community in numerous ways. Vancouverites are still passionate about basketball and continue to support the many initiatives of former players and other organizations that promote basketball in the city.
What was the Toronto Raptors' first season?
The Toronto Raptors suffered a poor debut season. They won only 21 games. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors was the inaugural NBA season. The Raptors were among two expansion teams that joined the league in 1995, alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies. It was also the NBA's first season outside of the United States.
Isiah, an All-Star point guard who is also a Detroit Pistons legend, was appointed the team's General manager. He helped draft Damon Stoudamire to be named Rookie and Year. They also traded for Tracy Murray and Oliver Miller. Thomas also introduced a new primary logo of a dinosaur playing basketball and new pinstripe uniforms with the logo on the front of their jerseys. The Raptors added purple and red to their color scheme.
Brendan Malone was the Raptors' new head coach. They won against the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome on November 3. However, they lost their next seven matches.
Murray finished second in scoring and averaged 16.2 points per match. He also led the team's total of 151 three-point goals. Miller provided the team with 12.9 points, 7 .4 rebounds, 1 .4 steals, and 1 .9 blocks per game, and Robertson contributed 9 .3 points, 4 .4 rebounds, four assists and two steals per game off the bench.
Despite having the worst attendance record in the league they still managed to attract over 17283 fans per match at SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
How many NBA teams are there in Canada?
The Toronto Raptors were the Canadian NBA's only team in 2001. The Vancouver Grizzlies used to be an NBA team between 1995 and 2001. In 2001, however, they relocated to Memphis where they became the Memphis Grizzlies. Canada did have two teams--the Toronto Raptors and Vancouver Grizzlies--for a brief time during the late 1990s, but no other Canadian cities currently have an NBA team. Despite the lack of an NBA team in Canada, Canadians are still avid basketball fans, and many make their way to the United States to catch games. The Toronto Raptors are a well-known and popular team that has been around since 1995. They continue to attract large audiences for home games at Scotiabank Arena. Many Canadians travel to the United States each year to enjoy the NBA All-Star Weekend. Canada can host more than one NBA basketball team with its 38 million population. Many North American basketball enthusiasts have discussed the possibility of adding a second team. The Toronto Raptors continue to be the only Canadian representation within the NBA.
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), a professional league of basketball, is located in Canada. This league features six teams from Canadian cities and towns, including Fraser Valley Bandits (Abbotsford, BC), Edmonton Stingers (Edmonton, Alberta), Guelph Nighthawks (Guelph, Ontario), Hamilton Honey Badgers (Hamilton, Ontario), Saskatchewan Rattlers (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), and Niagara River Lions (St. Catharines, Ontario). The CEBL is Canada's only professional league for basketball.
The National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC), a professional men's basketball team, was in existence from 2011 through 2020. It was home to eight teams, including those from Halifax, Moncton Saint John and Cape Breton as well as Summerside, London Windsor, Windsor, Windsor and Kitchener. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the NBLC ceased operation.
Canada also has junior hockey leagues, like the Canadian National Basketball League. This semi-professional men's league is located in Vancouver BC. CNB teams come from British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba. Canadian Elite Development League is another Canadian junior basketball league. It consists mainly of teams from the Greater Toronto Area. AC) and Canadian Youth Basketball League. These leagues offer opportunities for young players to practice their skills in a supportive environment.
