Raptors Fall to Kings Despite Impressive Performances from Fred and Scottie

The Toronto Raptors suffered yet another defeat, this time at the hands of the Sacramento Kings. Fred VanVleet’s season-high 39 points led the Raptors, but poor three-point shooting and weak production off the bench doomed them as they ultimately fell 124-123.

Poor Three-Point Shooting and Its Impact

The Raptors' struggles with their three-point shooting were on full display in their loss to the Kings. They only made six threes for the second straight game, as the Kings outscored them by 33 points from deep. Even when they get open looks, they couldn't knock them down consistently enough to keep up with the Sacramento Kings of the world. Without making shots from deep, it’s hard for them to stay competitive in today's NBA. The Raptors shooting percentage from three, 28.6%, is significantly lower than the Kings’ 37%.

Fred VanVleet and Scottie Barnes Come Alive

Despite the overall team struggle, there were some bright spots for Toronto in this game. Fred VanVleet scored a season-high 39 points on 13 for 25 shooting and had 5 assists. Scottie Barnes also chipped in with 10 assists of his own to go along with 27 points. These are all positive signs of growth, but Raptors need more consistency, both Scottie and Fred VanVleet.

Gary Trent Jr. was also a no-show with only 11 points, one assist and one rebound to show in 24-plus minutes on the court. He was -4 in a game that was decided by 1 point. Raptors desperately need his three-point shooting and scoring ability, but he’s been unable to provide it consistently.

Struggles Off the Bench

The Raptors received very little production off their bench against the Kings, which significantly hurt their chances of winning. In contrast to the Raptors, who had no impact scorers off the bench, Malik Monk came into the game and scored 24 points, nailing five threes. He looked really good off the bench for the Kings.

Chris Boucher had an off night and couldn't impact the glass, making his decision-making look even worse. Khem Birch also failed to make an impact despite being used by Coach Nick Nurse in desperation late in the game due to his lack of offensive firepower. Thad Young subbed in for Koloko but didn't do much to help the team. The Raptors got dominated on the post with Domantas Sabonis' 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Raptors must step up their game in a hurry to compete with the best teams in the NBA. They'll look to bounce back against the Nets tomorrow night.
