Report: Knicks, Suns among teams interested in Raptors’ Anunoby

The New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns are among the teams interested in Toronto Raptors forward O.G. Anonuby, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.

The New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns are among the teams interested in Toronto Raptors forward O.G. Anonuby, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.

In his rumours column released Monday, Charania also confirmed a report by Ian Begley of SNY, who said last week that the Knicks have shown a willingness to trade multiple first-round picks for Anunoby.

Anunoby is a top wing defender in the NBA and currently leads the league in steals per game (2.1). The 25-year-old has also shot above 35 per cent from three-point range in five of his six seasons in the NBA and averaged above 15 points in the last three seasons, making him a possible contributor to any contending team.

Anunoby is also a very affordable trade chip. He’s in the second year of a four-year contract with an average salary of $18 million — the contract includes a player option for the fourth year.

Amid the Raptors’ disappointing season thus far, Charania calls them “a swing team in this year’s trade market” and reports that they’ve informed rival teams that they’ll make a decision on whether to buy, sell or stand pat closer to the Feb. 4 deadline.

Along with Anunoby, guards Fred VanVleet and Gary Trent Jr. are also viewed as possible trade candidates, with both players possibly becoming unrestricted free agents this off-season.

Earlier this month, The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor reported the Clippers had shown interest in VanVleet. Charania also previously reported the Suns and Orlando Magic were potential free-agent suitors for the 28-year-old.

And the Raptors reports didn’t end there. Charania wrote Monday that the future of Raptors head coach Nick Nurse, who reportedly has one year left beyond this season on his contract, is “expected to come into focus this summer.”

The Raptors are currently 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 23-28 record, one game back of a play-in spot and five games back of a guaranteed playoff spot.

What was the Toronto Raptors first season?

The Toronto Raptors' debut season was a disaster, with only 21 wins. 1995-1996 was the inaugural season for the Toronto Raptors in National Basketball Association (NBA). Along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, the Raptors were also one of the expansion teams that joined that league. This was also the first NBA-level season.

Isiah THOMAS, an All Star point guard from the Detroit Pistons, became the General Manager. He helped with the draft, which yielded Damon Stoudamire, who would go on to win Rookie of the Year. They also traded for Tracy Murray and Oliver Miller. Thomas introduced a new primary emblem featuring a dinosaur playing ball and pinstripe uniforms sporting the logo on the front. The Raptors added purple, and red to their new color scheme.

The Raptors' debut under new head coach Brendan Malone on November 3 ended in a victory against the New Jersey Nets at the SkyDome, but they lost their next seven games.

How long has the Raptors been in existence?

Toronto Raptors is an NBA franchise that is located in Toronto, Ontario. The Raptors, along the Vancouver Grizzlies, joined the NBA in 1995 as an expansion team. In 2001-02, the Raptors became the only Canadian-based NBA team after the Grizzlies moved to Memphis, Tennessee.

The Raptors, based in Toronto, play their home games at Scotiabank Arena. The city's NHL team also uses the arena, the Maple Leafs. Since their inception, the Raptors have been in the NBA playoffs 13 different times. They lost 6 games to Philadelphia 76ers in round one of the playoffs in 2021.

The Raptors were eligible for their first playoff appearance in 1999/2000. Unfortunately, they were swept by division rivals New York Knicks in the first round of the playoffs.

Fans were rare and few, and the team was not very exciting. There wasn't anything to root for, nor was there anyone who cared. The team finally decided to change their image after years of mediocrity and made every effort to appeal to the public.

In 2001, the team hired a professional advertising agency to help develop a marketing strategy that would make them famous in national markets. Using creative thinking, they devised a slogan, "Hear us roar."

At the time, the team was struggling financially, so they used the slogan to promote the fact that the games were sold out. They needed a catchy slogan and a great logo. This is where agency's creative genius shines. They combined the popular phrase "hear our roar" with "never say die". This became the Toronto Raptors' official motto.
