Frequently Asked Questions

How was the first year of existence for the Toronto Raptors?

The Toronto Raptors first season in the NBA proved to be difficult. Brendan Malone was hired by Isiah Thomas to be the head coach. The team quickly acquired many talented players through drafts and trades. They lost to the Chicago Bulls one time that season, but they ended up with a 21–61 win-loss record overall.

In 1996, Toronto drafted Marcus Camby, who became Rookie of the Year and formed part of the starting line-up with Alvin Williams at point guard. Damon Stoudamire, who was later traded, was also traded. Toronto tried to build a foundation to succeed in the future by making more roster changes.

Despite all the changes, Toronto struggles through its first few NBA seasons. After a period of transition and rebuilding, Toronto finally made its first playoff appearance in 2000 but lost the series to the New York Knicks.

Which five Raptors have been the most prolific per-game scorers over the past 50 years?

Kawhi Leonard leads the team in scoring with 26.6 points per games. Vince Carter has 23.4 points per game and Mike James has 20.3, Chris Bosh has 20.2, Chris Bosh 20.3, and DeMar DeRozan has 19.7 points per round.

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

NBA left Vancouver after a dispute regarding arena financing. The City was expected to contribute $40m towards the construction of a brand new basketball arena. It would include 12 luxury suites along with two restaurants, bars, and a hotel. To pay down existing debt, the City Council wanted the $60 million taxpayer money that the City Council would give to the team owner. The city would need to borrow $200 million to construct the arena. However, the owners of the team only had to repay $20 million in debt. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.

The City Council indicated that they would approve the plan if Rogers Arena was allowed to remain until the new facility is opened. However, the league refused to compromise and said that the arena was too small for them. Because it was too small, they didn't want anymore to play there. They felt that asking them to play in a smaller venue was unfair, especially since they weren't making any additional revenue.

The City Council then requested that the province step in to offer financial assistance. Although the province was willing to donate $150 million, the City Council still needed additional $100 million. That's when the City decided to drop its plans and focus on building a new downtown arena instead.

How did the Raptors win this year's NBA championship?

The Toronto Raptors made a trade for DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl on July 18, 2018. They also traded a 2019 protected draft pick and a DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs.

On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas (Raptors) and Delon Wright-C.J. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly afterwards.

The Toronto Raptors' offseason was very exciting. They made two huge trades that caused shockwaves throughout the NBA. The Raptors first traded DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, and a 2019 first-round draft pick (that was protected) to the San Antonio Spurs. They received Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs in exchange. They then traded Jonas Valanciunas for Delon Wright, C.J. Miles, as well as a 2024 draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's have a closer look at each trade.

Kawhi Leonard was traded to the Raptors as a risk-reward trade. Leonard is an MVP-caliber player when healthy, and he's a top-5 player in league. However, Leonard only played nine games last season because of injury and it is unclear if he will continue to play. However, the Raptors decided that the reward was worth the risk and pulled the trigger on the deal. Leonard has been playing at an All Star level and is currently in good health. Leonard averages 26 points and 8 rebounds per game. He also shoots 49% from behind the arc and 38% at three-point range. If he is healthy, the Raptors have a chance to win the NBA title this season.

Marc Gasol made a trade for Marc Gasol, but it was a very short-term one. Gasol is well into his 30s and clearly is past his prime. He is still a great player and brings valuable experience to the young Raptors team. He's averaging 15 points per game, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and shoots 45% from the three-point line. C.J., Delon Wright and other young talents were given up by the Raptors. Miles was used to acquire Gasol but the Raptors believe his experience will prove valuable in the playoffs.

The Raptors began the season strong with a 6-0 win. They broke the franchise record for winning 16 consecutive games, which was set by a record 16-4 record. On November 23, the Raptors won their 24th game against Cleveland Cavaliers. They also reached 20 wins faster than any other time in their history. To prevent Leonard's injury from getting worse, the Raptors rested him for 20 more games. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors went on to have a successful run in the playoffs, dispatching the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Leonard was named Finals' MVP as the Raptors won the first title against the Golden State Warriors.

The Toronto Raptors enjoyed a successful offseason. This has been a huge success. The Raptors will be contenders for many years with two All-Stars. They have shown they are capable and willing to make bold moves as well as take risks when it comes to assembling a championship-level team. It will be exciting to see if this team can continue their success.
