Why are Toronto Raptors called Raptors

The NBA's expansion to Canada saw the creation of the Toronto Raptors in 1995. Name and logo for the team were inspired from Jurassic Park. The team colours include bright red, purple and black as well as silver.

In the first season of Raptors basketball, the team struggled to find their footing in the league and finished with a 21-61 record. The team improved each year and they made their first playoff appearance in 1999.

The Raptors most memorable moment was 2019 when they captured their first NBA championship title. Toronto's first title was won by Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry, their backcourt duo. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in six thrilling games.

Since then, the Raptors are a favourite sports team in Canada. Toronto continues to excite basketball fans from around the world, with international superstars and local talent.

The Toronto Raptors are an integral part of Canada's basketball legacy. Their success on court inspires young athletes across Canada. They will remain one of Canada's most loved teams with their passionate fans, their unique style of play and commitment to excellence.

How did they win the NBA title 2019?

DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl and a protected 2019 draft pick were traded by the Toronto Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs on July 18, 2018.

On February 7, 2019, the Raptors traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles, as well as a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies, were traded by the Raptors for Marc Gasol--another All-Star and former Defender Player of Year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly following.

Two big trades by the Toronto Raptors sent shockwaves through NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl and a 2019 first round draft pick (that was not protected) were first traded by the Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs. In exchange for those players, they received Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green from the Spurs. Then, they traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles and a 2024 second-round pick were traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Marc Gasol, another multiple All-Star and former Defensive player of the year. These moves place the Raptors at the forefront of the race for a NBA title. Let's have a closer look at each trade.

Kawhi Leonard trade was a risky move by the Raptors. Leonard, who is coming off an MVP-caliber year, is one of the top-5 players in the league when he is healthy. His injury last season limited him to playing just nine games, and there is concern about his long-term physical health. The Raptors decided that the reward outweighed the risk and made the deal. Leonard has been healthy thus far and is playing at an All Star standard. He is averaging 26 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while shooting 49% from the field and 38% from three-point range. If he is healthy, the Raptors have a chance to win the NBA title this season.

Marc Gasol traded for Marc Gasol in a more short-term move. Gasol is well into his 30s and clearly is past his prime. But, he's still a good player that brings valuable experience and talent to the young Raptors. He averages 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per contest while shooting 45% from 3-point range and 34% from the field. C.J., Delon Wright and other young talents were given up by the Raptors. Miles to acquire Gasol, but they believe his experience will be invaluable come playoff time.

The Raptors began the season strong with a 6-0 win. They broke the franchise record for winning 16 consecutive games, which was set by a record 16-4 record. On November 23, the Raptors won their 24th game against Cleveland Cavaliers. They also reached 20 wins faster than any other time in their history. The Raptors were cautious with Leonard, resting him for more than 20 games throughout the season to prevent worsening his previous injury. They still managed to secure the 2nd seed East, just behind Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors made a strong run in the playoffs and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee Bucks' finals. Leonard was named Finals MVP and the Raptors won their first title against the Golden State Warriors in game 6.

The Toronto Raptors' offseason was a success, and it has paid off. The Raptors are well-positioned to be contenders over the next few years, with two All-Stars. They have demonstrated that they can make bold moves and take risks if it means putting together a championship-calibre team. It will be interesting for the future to see how they maintain their success.
