Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the Toronto Raptors called Raptors?

In 1995, the NBA expanded into Canada and created the Toronto Raptors. The name and logo of the team were inspired by Jurassic Park's film. The team colours are silver, bright red, purple, and black.

The Raptors had a difficult first season. They were 21-61 and struggled to make a name for themselves in the league. However, the team improved each year, and by 1999, they had made their first playoff appearance.

The Raptors' most memorable moment was in 2019, when they won the NBA championship title. Led by the backcourt duo of Kyle Lowry and Kawhi Leonard, Toronto won their first championship in a thrilling six-game series against the Golden State Warriors.

Since then, the Raptors are a favourite sports team in Canada. Toronto continues bringing excitement to basketball fans across the world with its international superstars as well as local talent.

The Toronto Raptors are a proud part of Canada's basketball heritage, and their success on the court inspires young athletes around the country. With their passionate fans, unique style of play, and commitment to excellence, there is no doubt that the Raptors will continue to be one of Canada's most beloved teams for years to come.

How did the Raptors win in 2019 the NBA title?

DeMar DeRozan was traded to Toronto Raptors by Jakob Poltl (protected 2019 first-round draft pick) and a Toronto Raptors player in return for Kawhi Leonard.

On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas C.J. was traded by the Raptors to the Memphis Grizzlies. Miles, and a 2024 draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded to Marc Gasol (another multiple All-Star player and former Defensive Player-of-the-Year) and Jeremy Lin shortly thereafter.

The Toronto Raptors had an exciting offseason. They made two major trades that shocked the NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, as well as a 2019 draft pick (that was secured) were the first trades made by the Raptors. In exchange they received Kawhi and Danny Green from Spurs. They then traded Jonas Valanciunas for Delon Wright, C.J. Miles and a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded for Marc Gasol--another All-Star, former Defensive Player-of-the-Year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's take a closer look at each trade.

The trade for Kawhi Leonard was a risk-reward move for the Raptors. Leonard, who is coming off an MVP-caliber year, is one of the top-5 players in the league when he is healthy. His injury last season limited him to playing just nine games, and there is concern about his long-term physical health. The Raptors decided the reward was worth taking the chance and signed the deal. Leonard has been healthy thus far and is playing at an All Star standard. Leonard is averaging 26 point, 8 rebounds and 3 assists per contest while shooting 49% from 3-point range and 38% from the field. He is a true threat to the Raptors' chances of winning an NBA championship if he stays healthy.

Marc Gasol traded for Marc Gasol in a more short-term move. Gasol is well into his 30s and clearly is past his prime. However, he is still a very good player who brings valuable experience to a young Raptors team. He averages 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per contest while shooting 45% from 3-point range and 34% from the field. C.J., Delon Wright and other young talents were given up by the Raptors. They acquired Gasol from Miles, but believe that his experience will prove invaluable in the playoffs.

The Raptors started the season with a 6-0 record. They won their 16th game against Cleveland Cavaliers on November 23rd. This broke their franchise record of 20 consecutive wins. On December 1, they reached 20 wins faster than ever before. Also, after defeating Washington Wizards 140-138 in double overtime on January 13, the Raptors set a franchise record for scoring the most points in franchise history. The Raptors were cautious with Leonard, resting him for more than 20 games throughout the season to prevent worsening his previous injury. They still managed to secure the 2nd seed East, just behind Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors made a strong run in the playoffs and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee Bucks' finals. Leonard was named Finals Champion and the Raptors took home their first title.

The Toronto Raptors had a great offseason. The Raptors are well-positioned to be contenders over the next few years, with two All-Stars. They have proven that they are willing to take risks and make bold moves if it means creating a championship-calibre team. It will be interesting to see if they can keep up this success in the future.

How many Toronto Raptors have had all-stars?

Vince Carter and Antonio Davis are the Raptors' eight All-Stars. These players, with the exception of VanVleet and Davis, have all been part of an impressive All-Star team.

What does "We The North” mean?

The phrase "We The North," also known as We The North Nation, is an anthem used by the Toronto Raptors. It was composed by Drake and Noah "40" Shebib.

Drake wrote the song while staying at his friend's apartment in Toronto. He completed his album Take Care with Kanye West. While there, Drake decided to write some lyrics about his hometown. Drake wanted it to be universally applicable. The song speaks about unity and pride as well as hope.

Drake began to work on the melody for We The North after he went to London to film the video for his single "Nice For What". He then recorded the instrumental version in one take.

Drake was working on the lyrics, and 40 came up the chorus. Drake loved the hook and asked to record it. Together, they came up with the final product.

The official music videos for "We The North Anthem," were released October 5, 2018. The video featured Shawn Mendes, a Canadian singer-songwriter, performing with Drake and other musicians.

Vancouver was there a NBA team?

No, Vancouver does not have an NBA team. From 1995 to 2001, the city was home to the Vancouver Grizzlies. However, the team moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver's basketball community supports the Toronto Raptors because they are the closest NBA team. In addition, other professional basketball teams play in and around the Greater Vancouver Area, such as the BC Tigers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League and the Vancouver Volcanoes of the International Basketball League. There are many amateur and semi-professional basketball teams that play in local leagues.

Vancouver is home to many other sports fans. The Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association, for example, is a group that aims to bring back former players and increase awareness about basketball in British Columbia. It hosts clinics and viewing parties at Raptors games.

The city's love of basketball has not decreased since the departures of the Grizzlies. And it continues to be a supportive community in numerous ways. Vancouverites still love basketball, and they continue to support former players and other organizations who work to promote the sport within the city.

How long have the Raptors been a team?

Toronto Raptors, an NBA team located in Toronto (Ontario), is home to the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors joined NBA in 1995 as an expansion club, alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Raptors were the only Canadian-based NBA team when the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver to Memphis in 2001-02.

Toronto Raptors are based at Scotiabank Arena, where they play their home games. The Maple Leafs, a city's NHL club, also uses the arena. Since their foundation, the Raptors were in the NBA playoffs 13 more times. The most recent was in 2021 where they lost 6 to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Raptors made their first playoff appearance in 1999-2000. In the first round, the Raptors were swept by New York Knicks division rivals.

Fans were rare and few, and the team was not very exciting. There was nothing to root for or watch, and no one knew why anyone cared. But after years of mediocrity, the team decided to change its image and went out of its way to make itself more appealing to the public.

They hired an advertising agency in 2001 to create a strategy for marketing that would help them achieve national fame. Their slogan was "Hear Us Roar!"

At the time, the team was struggling financially, so they used the slogan to promote the fact that the games were sold out. The only thing they needed was a catchy phrase, and a great logo. This is where the creative genius of the agency shines through. They combined the phrase "hear us roar" with another popular saying, "never say die." This became the official motto of the Toronto Raptors.
