Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. This meant the city would have to borrow $200 million to build the arena, while the team owners only had to pay back $20 million in debt. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.
The City Council said they were willing to go ahead with the plan if the NBA agreed to stay at Rogers Arena until after the opening of the new facility. The league, however, refused to accept the plan. They claimed that the arena was not large enough. They couldn't play there any more because the arena was too small. They felt it was unfair to ask them to keep playing in a smaller venue when they were not getting more revenue.
The City Council requested financial assistance from the province in return. The Province agreed to contribute $150 million, but the City Council still required $100 million. The City decided to focus its efforts on building a new downtown arena and dropped its plans.
When was the Raptors their first game?
The Raptors' first regular season was played at the SkyDome against the New Jersey Nets, November 3, 1995. Alvin Robertson scored the first points in franchise lore. The Raptors beat the Nets, 94-79, thanks to contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 assists and 10 points) and Robertson (30 point plays).
What was the first season for the Toronto Raptors
The Toronto Raptors won just 21 games during their debut season. 1995-1996 was the inaugural season for the Toronto Raptors in National Basketball Association (NBA). Along with the Vancouver Grizzlies, the Raptors were also one of the expansion teams that joined that league. It was also a first NBA season that was played outside of the United States.
Isiah THOMAS, an All Star point guard from the Detroit Pistons, became the General Manager. He helped with the draft, which yielded Damon Stoudamire, who would go on to win Rookie of the Year. In separate trades, they also acquired Tracy Murray as well as Oliver Miller. Thomas also introduced a new primary logo of a dinosaur playing basketball and new pinstripe uniforms with the logo on the front of their jerseys. The Raptors added purple, and red to their new color scheme.
Brendan Malone was the Raptors' new head coach. They won against the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome on November 3. However, they lost their next seven matches.
Murray finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game, and led them with 151 three-point field goals during that season. Miller contributed 12.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 stoles to the team. Robertson contributed 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and four assists per game from the bench.
Despite having one among the worst records, attendance was good. They averaged more than 17283 fans per SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
