Frequently Asked Questions
Did Vancouver have an NBA team?
Vancouver does not have a NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies existed in the city from 1995 to 2001. However, the team moved to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver's basketball community supports the Toronto Raptors because they are the closest NBA team. Additionally, there are other professional basketball clubs that play in the Greater Vancouver Area. These include the BC Tigers from the Canadian Elite Basketball League as well as the Vancouver Volcanoes from the International Basketball League. Several amateur and semi-professional teams also play in various local leagues.
Vancouver offers many recreational options for fans to enjoy their favorite sport, aside from basketball. The Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association, for example, is a group that aims to bring back former players and increase awareness about basketball in British Columbia. They host clinics for young players and offer viewing parties for Raptors games.
The city's enthusiasm for basketball has not diminished following the departure from the Grizzlies. This community continues to support the sport through many different ways. Vancouverites continue their love for basketball by supporting former players, attending Raptors games and supporting other initiatives that help spread awareness about the game within the city.
How was the first year of existence for the Toronto Raptors?
The first season of the NBA for Toronto Raptors was difficult. Brendan Malone was appointed head coach by Isiah Tom, and they soon acquired many talented players via trades and in the draft. They beat the Chicago Bulls once, but overall finished with a 21 - 61 win-loss record.
In 1996, Toronto drafted Marcus Camby, who became Rookie of the Year and formed part of the starting line-up with Alvin Williams at point guard. Later in 1997, Damon Stoudamire was traded away, and more changes to the roster were made over the following years as Toronto looked to build a foundation for future successes.
Despite all its changes, the team continues to struggle in its first few NBA seasons. Toronto made its first playoff appearance in 2000 after years of rebuilding and transition. However, it lost the series to New York Knicks.
Who is the owner of Toronto Raptors?
Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, the owners of this team, owns it. MLSE is also the owner of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs, MLS’s Toronto FC, and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts. The AHL’s Toronto Marlies and the Toronto Rock lacrosse teams are all part of MLSE.
Why are Toronto Raptors called Raptors
The Toronto Raptors were founded in 1995 as part of the NBA's expansion into Canada. The logo and name of the team are based on Jurassic Park, which was released in 1995. The team colors include bright red and purple as well as black and silver.
The Raptors' first season of basketball was a struggle. They finished the season with a record of 21-61. They improved every year, and in 1999 they were ready to make their first playoff appearance.
The Raptors' most memorable moment in 2019 was when they won their first NBA championship title. Toronto won their first title in thrilling six-game series against Golden State Warriors under the leadership of Kawhi and Kyle Lowry, the Raptors' backcourt duo.
Since then, the Raptors have become firmly entrenched as one of Canada's most beloved sports teams. Toronto continues to excite basketball fans from around the world, with international superstars and local talent.
The Toronto Raptors are an integral part of Canada's basketball legacy. Their success on court inspires young athletes across Canada. It is clear that the Raptors will be a favorite team for many years due to their loyal fans, innovative play style, and dedication to excellence.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. The City Council wanted to provide $60 million in taxpayer funds to team owners to repay their existing debt. This meant that the city had to borrow $200m to construct the arena. But the team owners would only have to pay back $20m. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.
If the NBA would agree to keep Rogers Arena open until the opening of the new facility, the City Council was willing to approve the plan. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. It was too small for them to continue playing there. They felt it unfair to ask them for more revenue by asking them to stay in the smaller venue.
The City Council then asked the province to step in and help out by offering financial assistance. The province agreed to provide $150 million towards the project, but the City Council still needed another $100 million. That was when the City decided that it would instead concentrate on building an arena downtown.
What does "We The North" actually mean?
The Toronto Raptors use the anthem "We The North", also known as We The North Nation. It was composed by Drake, producer Noah "40", Shebib.
Drake wrote the song in Toronto while staying with a friend. He finished recording his album Take Care with fellow artist Kanye West. Drake decided to create lyrics about his hometown, while he was there. Drake wanted it to be universally applicable. It is about unity, pride, hope.
Drake started working on the melody for We The North when he travelled to London to film the video of his single "Nice For What." He recorded the instrumental version of the song in one take.
Drake was working on the lyrics, and 40 came up the chorus. Drake heard the hook and asked 40 if he could record it. Together, they came up with the final product.
The official music video for "We The North Anthem" was released on October 5, 2018. It featured Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes performing along with Drake and other musicians.
