Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Raptors defeat the Chicago Bulls in the NBA?

The Raptors defeated the Chicago Bulls on March 24, 1996 to win the NBA Championship. Final score: 109-108. Michael Jordan attempted a last-second shot to try and win the game for the Bulls, but it did not count because it was after the final buzzer had sounded.

How did the Raptors win in 2019 the NBA title?

DeMar DeRozan was traded to Toronto Raptors by Jakob Poltl (protected 2019 first-round draft pick) and a Toronto Raptors player in return for Kawhi Leonard.

On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas (Raptors) and Delon Wright-C.J. Miles, as well as a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies, were traded by the Raptors for Marc Gasol--another All-Star and former Defender Player of Year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly following.

The Toronto Raptors' offseason was very exciting. They made two huge trades that caused shockwaves throughout the NBA. DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, as well as a 2019 draft pick (that was secured) were the first trades made by the Raptors. They received Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs in exchange. Then, Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Spurs in exchange for Delon Wright C. J. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection to the Memphis Grizzlies, were traded to Marc Gasol--another All-Star and former Defender of the Year. These moves have put the Raptors in a strong position to challenge for the NBA title. Let's examine each trade.

Kawhi Leonard's trade was a risk-reward deal for the Raptors. Leonard is an MVP-caliber player when healthy, and he's a top-5 player in league. But, injury limited Leonard to just 9 games last season, and there are doubts about his long term health. The Raptors decided that the reward outweighed the risk and made the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. Leonard is averaging 26 point, 8 rebounds and 3 assists per contest while shooting 49% from 3-point range and 38% from the field. If he can keep his health, he will give the Raptors a real shot at winning the NBA title.

Marc Gasol's trade was more a short-term deal than anything else. Gasol is now in his 30s and clearly has reached his peak. However, he is still a very good player who brings valuable experience to a young Raptors team. He is averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range. C.J. Wright and Delon Wright were young assets the Raptors traded. Miles to acquire Gasol, but they believe his experience will be invaluable come playoff time.

The Raptors had a great start to the season, starting with a 6-0 victory. They broke the record for their best start in 20 games with a 16-4 record. They reached 20 wins faster that any time in their past history when they beat Cleveland Cavaliers 24 times. The Raptors took precautions with Leonard and rested him for more 20 games to avoid worsening the injury. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors went on to have a successful run in the playoffs, dispatching the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Leonard was named Finals' MVP as the Raptors won the first title against the Golden State Warriors.

The Toronto Raptors had a great offseason. Two All-Stars are on the roster and the Raptors look poised to be contenders in the years ahead. They have shown they are capable and willing to make bold moves as well as take risks when it comes to assembling a championship-level team. It will be exciting to see if this team can continue their success.

Raptor is the Raptors' leader, and they have been one of most successful NBA teams since winning their first championship in 2019. This was a historic moment for Canadian basketball fans. Raptor continues to be a major source of pride for all those who call themselves part of the Raptors family. Raptors pride is guaranteed to continue as long as the Raptors are around. Long live the Raptor. Go, Toronto Raptors!

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City of Vancouver was to contribute $40million towards the construction a new basketball venue. This would include 12 luxury suites as well as two restaurants, a bar and a hotel. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. The city would need to borrow $200 million to construct the arena. However, the owners of the team only had to repay $20 million in debt. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.

The City Council said they were willing to go ahead with the plan if the NBA agreed to stay at Rogers Arena until after the opening of the new facility. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. It was too small for them to continue playing there. They felt that it was unfair for them to continue playing in a smaller space when they weren't receiving any additional revenue.

The City Council asked for financial assistance and offered to help the province. Although the province offered $150 million to the project, the City Council needed $100 million more. The City then decided to abandon its plans and instead focus on building a new downtown arena.

Was Vancouver home to an NBA team?

Vancouver does not have a NBA team. From 1995 to 2001, the city was home to the Vancouver Grizzlies. However, the team moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 2001. Now, basketball enthusiasts in Vancouver support the Toronto Raptors as they are the closest NBA team to the area. Additionally, there are other professional basketball clubs that play in the Greater Vancouver Area. These include the BC Tigers from the Canadian Elite Basketball League as well as the Vancouver Volcanoes from the International Basketball League. Several amateur and semi-professional teams also play in various local leagues.

Vancouver basketball fans have many other options than just playing the game. Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association is a group that aims at connecting former players with one another and raising awareness about basketball in British Columbia. The association hosts events such as viewing parties for Raptors games and clinics to help young players develop their game.

The city's passion for basketball has not diminished after the departure of the Grizzlies. It continues to support the sport in many ways. Vancouverites continue to show their passion for basketball by attending local games, watching Raptors games and supporting the many initiatives undertaken by former players and other organizations working to spread awareness about basketball within the city.
