Frequently Asked Questions

Did Vancouver have an NBA team?

Vancouver does NOT have a NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies existed in the city from 1995 to 2001. However, the team moved to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver is home to the Toronto Raptors, the local NBA team. The Greater Vancouver Area also hosts professional basketball teams, such as Vancouver Volcanoes and the Canadian Elite Basketball League's BC Tigers. A number of amateur and semiprofessional teams participate in various local leagues.

Vancouver basketball fans have many other options than just playing the game. For example, the Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association is a group that strives to connect former players from the team with each other and also bring awareness of basketball in British Columbia. It hosts clinics and viewing parties at Raptors games.

The city's passion for basketball has not diminished after the departure of the Grizzlies. It continues to support the sport in many ways. Vancouverites continue their love for basketball by supporting former players, attending Raptors games and supporting other initiatives that help spread awareness about the game within the city.

How many all-stars have Toronto Raptors had?

Vince Carter, Antonio Davis (Raptors), DeMar DeRozan (5 Raptors), Kyle Lowry (4 Raptors), Kawhi Leonard (3 Raptors), Pascal Siakam (2 Raptors) and Fred VanVleet (8 Raptors All stars). Except for Davis and VanVleet who were part of this All-Star team, all the players have been selected to other NBA teams such as Leonard.

When was the Raptors first ever playoff win?

Toronto defeated New York 3-2 in their first playoff series. They advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals under Lenny Wilkens, for the first time in franchise history.

What was the Raptors best year?

The 2019 championship season was the Toronto Raptors' greatest year. It was a thrilling and memorable season for the Raptors, marking the first time they won an NBA Championship in franchise history. Kawhi Leonard was crowned Finals MVP. The team's regular season record was 58-24. They defeated the Golden State Warriors 6-1 to claim the title.

The Toronto Raptors made a change in 2013 when they replaced Bryan Colangelo (then general manager) with Masai Ujiri. This was a major change for the franchise, and would lead to a new era that would see them one of the most successful teams in the NBA.

The Raptors under Ujiri enjoyed a resurgence and reached the playoffs in 2014. This was their first playoff appearance since 2008. They've won five division titles and had their best season yet in 2018. Ujiri also made a risky, but profitable trade that year and sent DeMar DeRozan over to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard.

The Raptors had an incredible 2019, winning their first conference championship, and reaching the NBA finals. They conquered the Golden State Warriors in a total of six games.

Ujiri's time with the Raptors was a great success. He should be credited for helping to change the team's fortunes. The Raptors are now among the best in the NBA and look poised for greatness for the future.

The 2019 championship season will be remembered as one the greatest years in Raptors history.

Ujiri as well as the Toronto Raptors must continue to build a culture that supports their players, staff and players. The future of this team looks bright with their dedication to excellence. The 2019 Toronto Raptors championship season set the standard. Now it's up for Ujiri to build on that success with his team.

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

The dispute with Vancouver City Council over arena financing led to NBA leaving Vancouver. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. This meant that the city would have had to borrow $200m in order to build the arena. While the team owners had only to pay $20 million, this was a huge difference. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.

The City Council said they were willing to go ahead with the plan if the NBA agreed to stay at Rogers Arena until after the opening of the new facility. The league, however, refused to accept the plan. They claimed that the arena was not large enough. They were not interested in playing there anymore, as it was too small. They felt that asking them to play in a smaller venue was unfair, especially since they weren't making any additional revenue.

The City Council asked for financial assistance and offered to help the province. The province agreed to provide $150 million towards the project, but the City Council still needed another $100 million. At that point, the City decided to stop its plans and concentrate on building a new downtown arena.
