Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
Because of a dispute with Vancouver's City Council over arena financing, NBA had to leave Vancouver. The City was expected to contribute $40m towards the construction of a brand new basketball arena. It would include 12 luxury suites along with two restaurants, bars, and a hotel. To pay down existing debt, the City Council wanted the $60 million taxpayer money that the City Council would give to the team owner. This meant that the city had to borrow $200m to construct the arena. But the team owners would only have to pay back $20m. This would mean that the city's taxpayers would be responsible for paying back the rest of the loan.
The City Council stated that they would be open to the plan if the NBA agreed not to leave Rogers Arena until the new facility opens. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. It was too small for them to continue playing there.
