Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Toronto Raptors called Raptors

The NBA's expansion in Canada led to the 1995 founding of Toronto Raptors. Name and logo for the team were inspired from Jurassic Park. The team colours include bright red, purple and black as well as silver.

The Raptors were struggling to establish themselves in the league during their first season. They ended up with a record 21-61. The team improved each year and they made their first playoff appearance in 1999.

The Raptors' most memorable moment in 2019 was when they won their first NBA championship title. Toronto won their first title in thrilling six-game series against Golden State Warriors under the leadership of Kawhi and Kyle Lowry, the Raptors' backcourt duo.

The Raptors have been one of Canada's most beloved teams since that time. Toronto continues to provide excitement to basketball fans worldwide, whether they are international superstars or homegrown talent.

The Toronto Raptors are an integral part of Canada's basketball legacy. Their success on court inspires young athletes across Canada. With their passionate fans, unique style of play, and commitment to excellence, there is no doubt that the Raptors will continue to be one of Canada's most beloved teams for years to come.

How did the Raptors win in 2019 the NBA title?

DeMar DeRozan was traded to Toronto Raptors by Jakob Poltl (protected 2019 first-round draft pick) and a Toronto Raptors player in return for Kawhi Leonard.

On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas was traded to the Raptors for Delon Wright, C.J. Miles and a 2024 second-round pick from the draft to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Marc Gasol, another multiple All-Star and former Defensive Players of the Year. Jeremy Lin was signed shortly thereafter.

The Toronto Raptors had an extremely exciting offseason. Two major trades sent shockwaves through NBA. The Raptors first traded DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, and a 2019 first-round draft pick (that was protected) to the San Antonio Spurs. In exchange, they got Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green (Spurs). Then they traded Jonas Valanciunas to the Spurs and Delon WrightC.J. Miles, as well as a 2024 draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year. These moves place the Raptors at the forefront of the race for a NBA title. Let's examine each trade.

Kawhi Leonard's trade to the Raptors was risky but a good move. Leonard, who is coming off an MVP-caliber year, is one of the top-5 players in the league when he is healthy. His injury last season limited him to playing just nine games, and there is concern about his long-term physical health. But the Raptors decided that it was worth the risk, and they signed the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. He's averaging 26 points per game, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and shoots 49% from the floor and 38% from three point range. If he keeps his health good, he could be a key to the Raptors winning the NBA title.

Marc Gasol made a trade for Marc Gasol, but it was a very short-term one. Gasol is in his mid-30s and is clearly past his prime. Yet, he is still a solid player who can bring valuable experience to a young Raptors roster. He averages 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists per contest while shooting 45% from 3-point range and 34% from the field. C.J. Wright and Delon Wright were young assets the Raptors traded. Miles was used to acquire Gasol but the Raptors believe his experience will prove valuable in the playoffs.

The Raptors had a great start to the season, starting with a 6-0 victory. They broke the record for their best start in 20 games with a 16-4 record. They reached 20 wins faster that any time in their past history when they beat Cleveland Cavaliers 24 times. To avoid further injury, Leonard was rested by the Raptors for more than 20 games. However, they managed to capture 2nd place in East, only trailing behind Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors had a great run in the playoffs. They defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Milwaukee Bucks to reach their first NBA Finals. The Raptors won their first title in game 6 of the finals against the Golden State Warriors, with Leonard named Finals MVP.

The Toronto Raptors had a very successful offseason, which has paid off in a big way. The Raptors are well-positioned to be contenders over the next few years, with two All-Stars. They have demonstrated that they can make bold moves and take risks if it means putting together a championship-calibre team. It will be interesting to see if they can keep up this success in the future.

How long have the Raptors been a team?

Toronto Raptors is an NBA basketball franchise. The Raptors joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1995, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. In 2001-02 the Raptors became Canada's only NBA-based team, after the Grizzlies moved to Memphis.

Toronto Raptors: The Raptors play their home games in Scotiabank Arena. The Maple Leafs, a city's NHL club, also uses the arena. Since their foundation, the Raptors were in the NBA playoffs 13 more times. The most recent was in 2021 where they lost 6 to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Raptors made their first playoff appearance in 1999-2000. They were defeated by the New York Knicks, division rivals, in the first round.

Fans were rare and few, and the team was not very exciting. There was not much to be excited about and nothing to cheer for. After years and years of failure, the team decided it was time to change. They went to great lengths to appeal to the masses.

The team hired an advertising agency to help them create a national marketing strategy in 2001. They came up with the slogan "Hear us roar" using creative thinking.

The slogan was used to promote the fact the games were sold out. They needed a catchy slogan and a great logo. This is where the agency's creative genius shines. They combined the expression "hear us roar" and another popular saying, "never die." This became the official motto of the Toronto Raptors.
