The Toronto Raptors lost 21 games in their first season. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors was the inaugural NBA season. The Raptors were one of two expansion teams that joined the league that year, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. This was also the first NBA-level season.
All-Star point guard and former Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas became the team's General Manager. He was a key contributor to the draft that resulted in Damon Stoudamire being named Rookie of Year. In separate trades, they also acquired Tracy Murray as well as Oliver Miller. Thomas also introduced a brand new primary logo, featuring a play by basketball dinosaur and new pinstripe jerseys with the logo. The Raptors added purple to their color scheme.
Brendan Malone became the Raptors head coach on November 3. They beat the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome to win their debut. But they lost the next seven games.
Murray finished second on team scoring, averaging 16.2 point per game. He was also the leader with 151 3-point field goals. Miller contributed 12.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.4 stoles to the team. Robertson contributed 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and four assists per game from the bench.
Despite having one among the worst records, attendance was good. They averaged more than 17283 fans per SkyDome (now Rogers Centre).
How was the first year of existence for the Toronto Raptors?
It was difficult for the Toronto Raptors to make it in the NBA's first season. Brendan Malone was hired as the head coach and Isiah THOMAS became GM. In 1995, the Raptors were established. Many talented players were drafted and traded for. They defeated the mighty Chicago Bulls once that season, but overall they finished with a 21-61 win-loss record.
Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. Camby became Rookie Of The Year and was a part of the starting line up with Alvin Williams, at point guard. Damon Stoudamire, who was later traded, was also traded. Toronto tried to build a foundation to succeed in the future by making more roster changes.
Despite all the changes, Toronto struggles through its first few NBA seasons. After a period of transition and rebuilding, Toronto finally made its first playoff appearance in 2000 but lost the series to the New York Knicks.
Did Vancouver have an NBA team?
Vancouver does not have a NBA team. The Vancouver Grizzlies existed in the city from 1995 to 2001. However, the team moved to Memphis Tennessee in 2001. Vancouver basketball fans support the Toronto Raptors, as they are the nearest NBA team to their area.
