Frequently Asked Questions
How did the Raptors win 2019's NBA title?
DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl and a protected 2019 draft pick were traded by the Toronto Raptors to the San Antonio Spurs on July 18, 2018.
The Raptors traded Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright C.J. on February 7, 2019. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies for Marc Gasol--another multi-All-Star and former defensive player of the year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly afterwards.
The Toronto Raptors had a very eventful offseason, making two big trades that sent shockwaves through the NBA. DeMar DeRozan was traded first to the Raptors, Jakob Poltl was traded second and a first-round draft pick for 2019 (that was still protected) was sent to San Antonio Spurs. They received Kawhi Leonard from the Spurs in exchange. They traded Jonas Valanciunas and Delon Wright C. J. Miles and a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded for Marc Gasol--another All-Star, former Defensive Player-of-the-Year. These moves put the Raptors in a great position to compete for an NBA title this season. Let's take a closer glance at each trade.
Kawhi Leonard's trade to the Raptors was risky but a good move. Leonard is a top-5 league player when healthy and coming off a MVP-caliber season. But, injury limited Leonard to just 9 games last season, and there are doubts about his long term health. However, the Raptors decided the reward was well worth the risk and settled for the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. He's averaging 26 points per game, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and shoots 49% from the floor and 38% from three point range. If he is healthy, the Raptors have a chance to win the NBA title this season.
The trade for Marc Gasol was more of a short-term move than anything else. Gasol is in his thirties and is clearly out of his prime. Gasol is still an excellent player, and he brings valuable experience to the young Raptors. He is averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists per game while shooting 45% from the field and 34% from three-point range. C.J. Wright and Delon Wright were young assets the Raptors traded. Miles was acquired by Gasol. However, the Raptors believe his expertise will prove to be valuable during playoffs.
The Raptors had a great start to the season, starting with a 6-0 victory. They broke the record for their best start in 20 games with a 16-4 record. They reached 20 wins faster that any time in their past history when they beat Cleveland Cavaliers 24 times. The Raptors were careful with Leonard and did not allow him to play more than 20 games during the season in order to avoid aggravating his injury. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Raptors went on to have a successful run in the playoffs, dispatching the Orlando Magic, Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks to reach the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Leonard was named Finals' MVP as the Raptors won the first title against the Golden State Warriors.
The Toronto Raptors' offseason was a success, and it has paid off. The Raptors have two All-Stars and are ready to compete for the title in years to come. They have proven they can take risks and make bold moves when it comes down to building a championship-caliber team. It will be fascinating to see if they can maintain this level of success in the future.
What happened to the Toronto Raptors after Kawhi Leonard left?
It was a banner year for the Toronto Raptors. In the 2020 season, the Raptors won 53 games. All-Star point-guard Kyle Lowry played a major role in the team's success. Lowry averaged 19.7 ppg, 7.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds per contest. Pascal Siakam, an All-Star forward, was also a part of Lowry's team. He averaged 22.9 ppg and 8.3 rebound per game. Norman Powell and Fred VanVleet were also strong role players for the Raptors. Because of their talent and depth, the team was able to overcome injuries sustained by key players such as Serge Ibaka or Marc Gasol.
The team was led by Coach of the Year Nick Nurse and All-NBA Second Teamer Pascal Siakam. . Siakam became a star thanks to bold strategic decisions made by Coach Nurse. He averaged nearly 20+ point per game. Kyle Lowry had been selected to the 2020 NBA All-Star team, his sixth consecutive selection.
The playoffs began earlier than usual this year. They took place at the "Bubble", Bay Lake in Florida, near Orlando. In the first round, the Raptors met the Brooklyn Nets and won 4-0. The Raptors fell 0-2 against Boston Celtics in Round 2. However, OG Anunoby struck a buzzer-beater to win Toronto in the third round. The series ended up going to seven games with Boston winning.
When was the Raptors’ first game?
The Raptors hosted their first ever regular season match against the New Jersey Nets on November 3, 1995 at the SkyDome. 33,306 fans were in attendance to watch Alvin Robertson score the first points in franchise history. The Raptors defeated Nets 94-79% with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (with 10 points and 10 assists) as well Robertson (30pts).
