Frequently Asked Questions

How many Toronto Raptors have had all-stars?

Eight All-Stars from the Raptors include Vince Carter, Antonio Davis, Chris Bosh, DeMar DeRozan, Kyle Lowry, Kawhi Leonard, Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. Except for Davis and VanVleet who were part of this All-Star team, all the players have been selected to other NBA teams such as Leonard.

What does "We The North" actually mean?

The Toronto Raptors use the anthem "We The North", also known as We The North Nation. It was composed by Drake and Noah "40" Shebib.

Drake wrote the song in Toronto while staying with a friend. He completed his album Take Care with Kanye West. Drake decided to make lyrics about his hometown while there. He wanted it to be something that could represent all Canadians. The song speaks about unity and pride as well as hope.

Drake started working on the melody for We The North when he travelled to London to film the video of his single "Nice For What." He recorded the instrumental version of the song in one take.

Drake was writing lyrics for the song when 40 suggested the chorus. Drake liked the hook so much that he asked 40 to record it. Together, they worked to create the final product.

The official music videos for "We The North Anthem," were released October 5, 2018. It featured Shawn Mendes (Canadian singer-songwriter) performing with Drake and others.

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

NBA left Vancouver because of a dispute with the City Council regarding arena financing. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. To pay down existing debt, the City Council wanted the $60 million taxpayer money that the City Council would give to the team owner. This meant that the city would have had to borrow $200m in order to build the arena. While the team owners had only to pay $20 million, this was a huge difference. This would mean that the city's taxpayers would be responsible for paying back the rest of the loan.

The City Council said they were willing to go ahead with the plan if the NBA agreed to stay at Rogers Arena until after the opening of the new facility. The league, however, refused to accept the plan. They claimed that the arena was not large enough. They were not interested in playing there anymore, as it was too small. They felt it unfair to ask them for more revenue by asking them to stay in the smaller venue.

The City Council asked the province for financial assistance. Although the province was willing to donate $150 million, the City Council still needed additional $100 million. The City decided to focus its efforts on building a new downtown arena and dropped its plans.
