Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment owns the team. MLSE also owns Toronto FC's NHL team, Toronto FC's MLS team, and the Toronto Argonauts CFL team.
How many years has the Raptors been around?
Toronto Raptors are an NBA NBA franchise. The Raptors, along the Vancouver Grizzlies, joined the NBA in 1995 as an expansion team. The Grizzlies relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2001-02, making the Raptors the only Canadian-based team in the NBA.
Toronto Raptors are based at Scotiabank Arena, where they play their home games. The city's NHL team also uses the arena, the Maple Leafs. The Raptors have made 13 appearances in the NBA playoffs since their inception. Most recently, they lost 6 games against the Philadelphia 76ers during the first round in 2021.
In 1999-2000 the Raptors reached their first playoff appearance. They were defeated by the New York Knicks, division rivals, in the first round.
There were not many fans and the team was not exciting. There wasn't much to cheer for, or even watch, and nobody knew why. After years of mediocrity, they decided to change the image of the team and tried to make themselves more appealing to the public.
They hired an advertising agency in 2001 to create a strategy for marketing that would help them achieve national fame. The team came up with a slogan called "Hear us Roar!"
The slogan was created to advertise the fact that all the games had been sold out. The only thing they needed was a catchy phrase, and a great logo. This is where creativity shines through. They combined the phrase "hear us roar" with another popular saying, "never say die." This became the official motto of the Toronto Raptors.
What year did the Raptors beat Chicago Bulls?
The Raptors defeated Chicago Bulls on March 24, 1996. They would go on to win the NBA Championship in 1996. The final score was 110-108. Michael Jordan attempted to win the Bulls' game with a last-second shot, but it failed because it occurred after the final buzzer had sounded.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
NBA left Vancouver after a dispute regarding arena financing. The City of Vancouver was to contribute $40million towards the construction a new basketball venue. This would include 12 luxury suites as well as two restaurants, a bar and a hotel. The City Council wanted to provide $60 million in taxpayer funds to team owners to repay their existing debt. The city would need to borrow $200 million to construct the arena. However, the owners of the team only had to repay $20 million in debt. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.
If the NBA would agree to keep Rogers Arena open until the opening of the new facility, the City Council was willing to approve the plan. However, the league refused to compromise and said that the arena was too small for them. They didn't want to play there anymore because it was too small. They felt asking them to continue playing in a smaller venue was unfair when they weren't getting any extra revenue.
The City Council asked the province for financial assistance. While the province provided $150 million for the project, the City Council required another $100 million. That's when the City decided to drop its plans and focus on building a new downtown arena instead.
When was the Raptors their first game?
The Raptors vs. New Jersey Nets was their first regular-season match at the SkyDome. Alvin Robertson scored the first point in franchise history, drawing 33,306 spectators. The Raptors defeated the Nets 94-79 with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 points and 10 assists) and Robertson (30 pts).
