Frequently Asked Questions

When did the Raptors win their first playoff series?

Toronto won their inaugural playoff series when they defeated New York 3-1 in 2001. They reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2001 for the first and only time under Lenny Wilkens.

Why are Toronto Raptors called Raptors

The NBA's expansion to Canada saw the creation of the Toronto Raptors in 1995. The team's name and logo were inspired by the film Jurassic Park, released that same year. The team colors include bright red and purple as well as black and silver.

The Raptors were struggling to establish themselves in the league during their first season. They ended up with a record 21-61. The team continued to improve each year and made it to the playoffs in 1999.

The Raptors most memorable moment was 2019 when they captured their first NBA championship title. Toronto won its first championship under the leadership of Kawhi Leonard (backcourt) and Kyle Lowry (courtside).

Since then, the Raptors have become firmly entrenched as one of Canada's most beloved sports teams. Toronto continues to excite basketball fans from around the world, with international superstars and local talent.

The Toronto Raptors are a proud part of Canada's basketball heritage, and their success on the court inspires young athletes around the country. With their passionate fans, unique style of play, and commitment to excellence, there is no doubt that the Raptors will continue to be one of Canada's most beloved teams for years to come.

How was the Toronto Raptors' first year?

The first season of the NBA for Toronto Raptors was difficult. Brendan Malone was appointed head coach by Isiah Tom, and they soon acquired many talented players via trades and in the draft. They lost to the Chicago Bulls one time that season, but they ended up with a 21–61 win-loss record overall.

Toronto drafted Marcus Camby in 1996. Camby became Rookie Of The Year and was a part of the starting line up with Alvin Williams, at point guard. Damon Stoudamire was traded later in 1997. Toronto made more roster changes over the years to ensure future success.

Despite all its changes, the team continues to struggle in its first few NBA seasons. After a period of transition and rebuilding, Toronto finally made its first playoff appearance in 2000 but lost the series to the New York Knicks.

When was the Raptors their first game?

The Raptors hosted their first ever regular season match against the New Jersey Nets on November 3, 1995 at the SkyDome. 33,306 fans were in attendance to watch Alvin Robertson score the first points in franchise history. The Raptors defeated Nets 94-79% with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (with 10 points and 10 assists) as well Robertson (30pts).

Which was the Raptors' best year?

The 2019 championship season was the Toronto Raptors' greatest year. It was a thrilling and memorable season for the Raptors, marking the first time they won an NBA Championship in franchise history. Kawhi Leonard was named Finals MVP after the team posted a record of 58-24 during the regular season. They beat the Golden State Warriors six times to win the title.

In 2013, the Toronto Raptors changed their front office, replacing then-general manager Bryan Colangelo with Masai Ujiri. This move would herald a new age for the franchise. They would be one of the best in the NBA.

The Raptors were able to make a comeback under Ujiri and made it to the playoffs in 2014. The Raptors have won five Division titles, and they had their most successful regular-season in 2018. Ujiri was also able to make a risky yet successful trade that sent DeMar DeRozan from the San Antonio Spurs to get Kawhi Leonard.

The Raptors had a phenomenal 2019, winning their first conference crown and making it to NBA finals. In six games, they defeated the Golden State Warriors.

Ujiri has been an outstanding success with the Raptors and deserves to be credited for turning around the team's fortunes. Thanks to his leadership, the Raptors are now one of the best teams in the NBA and look poised to remain contenders for years to come.

The 2019 championship season is certain to be one of the most memorable in Raptors' history.

Ujiri, and all of the Toronto Raptors should continue to work towards creating a winning culture for their players and staff. With continued dedication to excellence, the future looks bright for this team. The 2019 Toronto Raptors championship season set the standard. Now it's up for Ujiri to build on that success with his team.

Was Vancouver home to an NBA team?

No, Vancouver does not have an NBA team. The city had the Vancouver Grizzlies from 1995-2001, but the team relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2001. Now, basketball enthusiasts in Vancouver support the Toronto Raptors as they are the closest NBA team to the area. There are also other professional basketball teams that play in and around Vancouver, including the BC Tigers of Canada's Elite Basketball League and Vancouver Volcanoes International Basketball League. Several amateur and semi-professional teams also play in various local leagues.

Vancouver offers many recreational options for fans to enjoy their favorite sport, aside from basketball. Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association aims to help former players connect with each other, and raise awareness about the game in British Columbia. This association organizes events like viewing parties for Raptors games or clinics to help young athletes develop their game.

The city's love for basketball has not diminished since the departure of the Grizzlies, and it remains a community that supports the sport in myriad ways. Vancouverites continue their love for basketball by supporting former players, attending Raptors games and supporting other initiatives that help spread awareness about the game within the city.
