Frequently Asked Questions
Why are Toronto Raptors called Raptors
The Toronto Raptors were founded in 1995 as part of the NBA's expansion into Canada. The logo and name of the team are based on Jurassic Park, which was released in 1995. The team colours are silver, bright red, purple, and black.
The Raptors' first season of basketball was a struggle. They finished the season with a record of 21-61. They improved every year, and in 1999 they were ready to make their first playoff appearance.
The Raptors' most memorable moment came in 2019 when they won their first NBA championship title. Toronto was led by Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry in the backcourt, winning their first NBA championship.
Since then, Canada's most loved sports team, the Raptors, have been an institution. From international superstars to homegrown talents, Toronto continues to bring excitement to basketball fans around the world.
Canada's proud heritage is represented by the Toronto Raptors. Their success on the courts inspires young basketball players all over the country. The Raptors will continue being a favourite team because of their passionate fans and unique style.
How did the Toronto Raptors fare after Kawhi Leonard's departure?
The Toronto Raptors had a great year. The Raptors won 53 of their 53 games in 2020. All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry was the key to the team's success. He averaged 19.7 points and 7.5 assists per game. Pascal Siakam (an All-Star forward) was with Lowry, who averaged 22.9 and 8.3 points per games. Norman Powell and Fred VanVleet were also strong role players for the Raptors. The team's depth and talent helped them to overcome injuries to key players like Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka.
The team was coached by Nick Nurse, the Coach of Year, and Pascal Siakam (All-NBA Second Teamer). . Siakam, who averaged almost 20+ points per match, made bold strategic decision that paid off. Kyle Lowry, his sixth consecutive selection to the NBA All-Star team in 2020, was named.
The playoffs kicked off later than usual, this year in August at the Bubble in Bay Lake (Florida), near Orlando. In the first round, the Raptors met the Brooklyn Nets and won 4-0. The Raptors lost 0-2 against Boston Celtics. However, OG Anunoby's buzzer-beater won Toronto the third and final game. The series reached seven games and Boston prevailed.
What does "We The North” actually mean?
The Toronto Raptors' anthem is "We The North", also known under the name We The North Nation. It was created by Drake and Noah Shebib (producer).
Drake wrote the song at his Toronto apartment with a friend. With Kanye West, he finished his album Take Care. While there, Drake decided to write some lyrics about his hometown. He wanted it to be something that could represent all Canadians. The song speaks about unity and pride as well as hope.
Drake began working on the melody to We The North in London, when he was filming the video for "Nice For What". The instrumental version of the song was recorded in one take.
Drake was working on the lyrics, and 40 came up the chorus. After hearing the hook, Drake thought it sounded like a great idea and asked if he would record it. Together, they worked to create the final product.
The official music videos for "We The North Anthem," were released October 5, 2018. The video featured Shawn Mendes from Canada, who performed with Drake and other musicians.
When were the Raptors able to beat the Chicago Bulls.
The Raptors defeated Chicago Bulls (who would win the NBA Championship the following year) on March 24, 1996. Final score: 109-108. Michael Jordan tried a last-second shot for the Bulls to win the game, but it didn't count as it occurred after the buzzer had sounded.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
The dispute with Vancouver City Council over arena financing led to NBA leaving Vancouver. The City had planned to contribute $40 million toward the construction of a new basketball arena. It would have 12 luxury suites, two restaurants and a bar. However, the City Council wanted to give the team owners $60 million in taxpayer money to pay off their existing debt. This would mean that the city would have needed to borrow $200m to build the arena. The team owners had to only pay $20 million. This would make it so that the city's tax payers would be responsible to repay the remainder of this loan.
The City Council agreed that the plan could be approved if the NBA was willing to continue playing at Rogers Arena through the opening of the new facility. But the league refused to agree, saying the arena wasn't big enough for them anymore. Because it was too small, they didn't want anymore to play there. They felt it was unfair to ask them to keep playing in a smaller venue when they were not getting more revenue.
The City Council then asked the province to step in and help out by offering financial assistance. The province agreed to provide $150 million towards the project, but the City Council still needed another $100 million. The City then decided to abandon its plans and instead focus on building a new downtown arena.
How did the Raptors win 2019's NBA title?
The Toronto Raptors made a trade for DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl on July 18, 2018. They also traded a 2019 protected draft pick and a DeMar DeRozan to the San Antonio Spurs.
On February 7, 2019, Jonas Valanciunas (Raptors) and Delon Wright-C.J. Miles and a 2024 second-round pick from the draft to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Marc Gasol, another multiple All-Star and former Defensive Players of the Year. Jeremy Lin was signed shortly thereafter.
The Toronto Raptors' offseason was very exciting. They made two huge trades that caused shockwaves throughout the NBA. DeMar DeRozan and Jakob Poltl were traded to the Raptors. A 2019 first-round draft selection (that was protected) was also traded to the San Antonio Spurs. In exchange, they got Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green (Spurs). Then, they traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles and a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies were traded for Marc Gasol--another All-Star, former Defensive Player-of-the-Year. These moves placed the Raptors into a formidable position to compete in the NBA title race this season. Let's have a closer look at each trade.
Kawhi Leonard's trade to the Raptors was risky but a good move. Leonard is an MVP-caliber player when healthy, and he's a top-5 player in league. However, Leonard only played nine games last season because of injury and it is unclear if he will continue to play. However, the Raptors decided that the reward was worth the risk and pulled the trigger on the deal. Leonard has been performing at an All-Star level so far. He has been in good health. He averages 26 points, 8 rebound, 3 assists, and 49% field goal shooting. His three-point percentage is 38%. If he can stay healthy, he gives the Raptors a real chance to win an NBA title this season.
Marc Gasol traded for Marc Gasol in a more short-term move. Gasol is in his thirties and is clearly out of his prime. He is still a great player and brings valuable experience to the young Raptors team. He's averaging 15 points per game, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and shoots 45% from the three-point line. C.J. Wright and Delon Wright were young assets the Raptors traded. Miles was able to purchase Gasol, but the Raptors feel his experience is invaluable when it comes time for playoffs.
The Raptors were off to a good start with a winning 6-0 record. Their 16th win was on November 23rd. The Raptors were cautious with Leonard, resting him for more than 20 games throughout the season to prevent worsening his previous injury. However, they managed to capture 2nd place in East, only trailing behind Milwaukee Bucks.
The Raptors made a strong run in the playoffs and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers in Milwaukee Bucks' finals. Leonard was named Finals Champion and the Raptors took home their first title.
The Toronto Raptors had a very successful offseason, which has paid off in a big way. Two All-Stars are on the roster and the Raptors look poised to be contenders in the years ahead. They have proven they can take risks and make bold moves when it comes down to building a championship-caliber team. It will be interesting for the future to see how they maintain their success.
