Why are the Toronto Raptors called Raptors?
The NBA's expansion into Canada in 1995 saw the founding of Toronto Raptors. The team's name and logo were inspired by the film Jurassic Park, released that same year. The team colours are bright red, purple, black, and silver.
The Raptors were struggling to establish themselves in the league during their first season. They ended up with a record 21-61. The team improved each year and they made their first playoff appearance in 1999.
The Raptors' most memorable moment was in 2019, when they won the NBA championship title. Toronto's first title was won by Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry, their backcourt duo. They defeated the Golden State Warriors in six thrilling games.
The Raptors have been a beloved team in Canada since then. Toronto continues bringing excitement to basketball fans across the world with its international superstars as well as local talent.
The Toronto Raptors are an integral part of Canada's basketball legacy. Their success on court inspires young athletes across Canada. They will remain one of Canada's most loved teams with their passionate fans, their unique style of play and commitment to excellence.
Why did NBA leave Vancouver?
NBA left Vancouver after a dispute regarding arena financing. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. The City Council decided to give $60 million to the team owners to help pay off existing debt. This would mean that the city would have needed to borrow $200m to build the arena. The team owners had to only pay $20 million. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.
The City Council stated that they would be open to the plan if the NBA agreed not to leave Rogers Arena until the new facility opens. The league refused to sign on, claiming that the arena was no longer large enough. They didn't want to play there anymore because it was too small. They felt it unfair to ask them for more revenue by asking them to stay in the smaller venue.
The City Council requested financial assistance from the province in return. Although the province was willing to donate $150 million, the City Council still needed additional $100 million. That's when the City decided to drop its plans and focus on building a new downtown arena instead.
What does "We The North", mean?
The Toronto Raptors' anthem is "We The North", also known under the name We The North Nation. It was composed by Drake and Noah "40" Shebib.
Drake wrote the song while visiting a Toronto friend. Drake finished his album Take care with Kanye West. While there, Drake decided to write some lyrics about his hometown. He wanted it to be something that could represent all Canadians. The song talks about unity, pride, and hope.
Drake began work on the melody of We The North's single "Nice For What" when he went to London to film the video. He recorded the instrumental version in just one take.
Drake was working on the lyrics, and 40 came up the chorus. Drake loved the hook and asked to record it. Together, they came up with the final product.
The official music video for "We The North Anthem" was released on October 5, 2018. It featured Shawn Mendes, Canadian singer-songwriter and Drake performing with other musicians.
When was the Raptors' first game?
The Raptors hosted their first ever regular season match against the New Jersey Nets on November 3, 1995 at the SkyDome. Alvin Robertson scored his first points in franchise history. 33,306 people were there. The Raptors defeated the Nets 94-79 with contributions from Damon Stoudamire (10 points and 10 assists) and Robertson (30 pts).

How to get to a Toronto Raptors Game from Your Location
Toronto Raptors games take place at the Air Canada Centre (ACC), in downtown Toronto, Ontario Canada. TTC Metro system takes you to ACC. Union Station takes about 30 minutes to get to ACC. Bay Street Station is the closest station to ACC.
If you come to ACC directly from Union Station, you should go through Bay street station. Follow the signs to ACC from there. Please follow the signs to Bay Street Station if you are coming from another direction.

The venue is accessible to those with disabilities. Individuals with disabilities can use the designated seating areas. In addition, the ACC offers sign language interpretation services.
The ACC does not charge a parking fee. However, street parking is limited.
