Frequently Asked Questions

When was the Raptors' first playoff series won?

Toronto won their first-ever playoff series as they defeated New York 3-2 in 2001, advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals for the first time in franchise history under head coach Lenny Wilkens.

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

NBA left Vancouver because of a dispute with the City Council regarding arena financing. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. However, the City Council wanted $60 million in taxpayer money for the team owners to pay off their existing debt. This meant the city would have to borrow $200 million to build the arena, while the team owners only had to pay back $20 million in debt. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.

The City Council indicated that they would approve the plan if Rogers Arena was allowed to remain until the new facility is opened. But the league refused, saying that the arena wasn’t large enough. They didn't want to play there anymore because it was too small. They felt asking them to continue playing in a smaller venue was unfair when they weren't getting any extra revenue.

The City Council asked the province for financial assistance. While the province provided $150 million for the project, the City Council required another $100 million. The City then decided to abandon its plans and instead focus on building a new downtown arena.

What was the Toronto Raptors first season?

The Toronto Raptors won just 21 games during their debut season. The 1995-1996 Toronto Raptors' inaugural season in the National Basketball Association was the first season for the Toronto Raptors. The Raptors were one of two expansion teams that joined the league that year, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies. It was also the first NBA season playing outside of the United States.

Isiah Thomas, an All-Star pointguard and former Detroit Pistons legend became the team’s General Manager. He was a key contributor to the draft that resulted in Damon Stoudamire being named Rookie of Year. In separate trades, they also acquired Tracy Murray as well as Oliver Miller. Thomas introduced a new primary symbol of a dinosaur playing in basketball and new pinstripe unis with the logo at the front of their jerseys. The Raptors also added red and purple to their color scheme.

Brendan Malone, new head coach for the Raptors, made his debut on November 3 against the New Jersey Nets at SkyDome. The Raptors lost their next seven contests.

Murray finished second on team scoring, averaging 16.2 point per game. He was also the leader with 151 3-point field goals. Miller had 12.9 points per game, 1.4 steals, 1.4 assists and 1.9 block per match, while Robertson was responsible for 9.3 points with 4.4rebounds, four assists, two steals per contest off the bench.

Every year hundreds of Canadians make the trip to the United States for the NBA All-Star Weekend. Canada can have multiple NBA teams, as it has a population greater than 38 million. Many North American basketball fans have debated the possibility of a second team. Until then, the Toronto Raptors remain the only Canadian representation in the NBA.
